All The Weyrs List: Names

Names in bold type are Anne McCaffrey's names and should not be used. We have this from Anne herself, who has said dragons count as characters, and fan club rules state that character names may not be re-used, even if they claim it's the same name but a different person (or dragon, as the case may be). Some Pern games have used names before they showed up in books; how they deal with the situation is up to them.

This list cross-references the names so people can check out the game or the book on/in which the name originated. If it's a MUD name, it is hyperlinked to the game's page. Book names are not hyperlinked not only so they'll stand out, but also because the book names are all found on one page instead of being scattered over 43(!) pages.

In most cases, books are listed in order of Pern chronology, since that is how the books page is set up and the books page was my reference for this one. However, in cases where Anne has re-used one of her own names, I went by order of publication. When a name was both from book(s) and one or more games, I went by publication date of the book and, when possible, hatching dates from the game in question. In very few cases, games had clearly used the name before the book was published. In those circumstances, the name is still in bold type, but the game is listed before the book's title. When the book was definitely first, the name is bold type and the book comes before any game(s) which have re-used the name.

As of September 20th, 2001, there are 4,875 dragons between the books and the 43 games. 4710 of the names are unique to one another while 165 have been re-used, some more than once. In cases of names re-used only by other MUDs, the MUDs are either divided by a semi-colon, which means that the first MUD used the name first; or a slash, which means I couldn't determine who had it first, and therefore simply listed them alphabetically. This was easy to come by if both dragons were from actual hatchings. In cases of closed games, it was often possible to determine the game had closed before the other opened, thus solving that one. In some instances I was able to determine it because I was familiar with the game and/or the circumtances of the ODs' creations. There are three special cases listed in the sections. They are numbered to link back to here, and using the back function of your browser will get you to the name you just left. The cases are as follows:
(1) The dragon is a transfer from a non-ATWL game
(2) The dragon hatched on a game which has been removed, but somehow it remained in the clutch list, and therefore has a clutch code
(3) The dragon was a transfer to a game which had an OD of the same name, but different color and rider
While I did my best to correct mistakes as I found them, re-add some 80 and remove some 40 names, there's a chance I missed something. Please let us know if anything seems awry.
